What Readers Say
I highly recommend Maitreya Das’s memoir Escape to Paradise and Beyond as a source of essential knowledge, including knowledge of the ultimate goal of human life. It will change your thinking and relieve you of any anxiety for the future.
Although the subject matter is grave, it is written with humor and is a great pleasure to read. The narrative gets more exciting with each page. In following his destiny, Maitreya experiences a roller coaster ride of ecstatic highs, and lows accepted with great stoicism. Once the scene is set, be prepared for an incredible adventure in a spiritual travelogue that takes him to seventy countries.
By following the thread running through the memoir, the reader can appreciate the blissful circumstances under which the Lord within the heart gradually reveals Himself to those seeking truth. At the highest level, He reveals Himself to Maitreya as the cause of all causes and the source of all that exists.
As a bonus, the reader will discover how to attain freedom from the threefold miseries of the material world: miseries arising from one’s own mind, from other living entities, and from natural calamities.
I have read this wondrous memoir once and am going to read it again.

“Escape to Paradise and Beyond takes its place among the most memorable road books to date, from Mark Twain’s The Innocents Abroad to Jack Kerouac’s On the Road. The numerous places of interest described in this work, and the personalities one meets along the way, give this book the feel of a travel book — not unlike the many that came before it — but it is really so much more. Maitreya Dasa takes us to places that will change the way we see the world. That is to say, his is ostensibly the story of one man’s journey. But is it? By following him as he saunters into unknown parts, one becomes acquainted with the self on the deepest of levels, and the knowledge that Everyman’s journey involves more than mere steps. It involves opening up to the experiences of life, as Maitreya does, penetrating their most profound meaning. We learn to see the steps within the steps, the Self within the self. A must read for seekers and for those interested in vast awakening—the awakening that leads from the senses to the soul.”

author of numerous books on Vaishnava spirituality
Escape to Paradise and Beyond tells the life story of Maitreya Dasa. It describes his journey through life, struggles, and the discovery of a “Supreme” being. It’s not every day we get to see a book with correct details of a person’s life with no exaggerations added. Escape to Paradise and Beyond is one such book.
Not being sufficiently loved by his mother, Maitreya Dasa started his life journey being shuttled from one guardian to another. From the hands of an indifferent stepmother and a strict school, he learned discipline. Escape to Paradise and Beyond tells his story, from growing up to finding himself. Follow him to Africa, as far east as Thailand and Malaysia, as far west as California and British Vancouver, and to Denmark and South and Central America.
Reading Escape to Paradise and Beyond was a thrilling experience. I was captivated by the author’s story and even followed him on his numerous journeys. You might wonder how? Well, it was possible considering the detailed descriptions he gave. He described each event with such stark and understandable details that it felt like I was part of the journey myself. So if I told you I was on the airplane with him, and on arriving in Africa, I felt that spell of tropical heat, you would believe me, right? I had a mental visualization of what his travel experiences must have felt like from his excellent descriptions.
One thing I greatly admired in the book was the author’s explicit honesty. He didn’t try sugarcoating his experiences to make him look great or anything. He explained his uncertainty and how he came to find his way in life. Although his experiences weren’t tragic, I know a couple of individuals going through similar situations would find his story motivating. Discovering oneself is most times a lifelong journey, and most people fail at this. Discovering the existence of a “Supreme” being is also an additional blessing. It gets depressing when you don’t know your purpose, but I believe his story will influence many people to take the bold step of finding themselves.
I should also add that the maps provided for the reading helped give me an insight into how far the author had traveled. I could see the connections to the places he mentioned in the book. Initially, I wondered why I would need maps for this book. Reading about his journeys and comparing the places on the maps, I could see why he chose the locations to which he went.
I enjoyed reading the book and had almost no issues with it. Therefore, I would rate it 4 out of 4 stars. I would recommend it to anyone seeking meaning in life. I believe the author’s journey will inspire so many people.

Maitreya Dasa states, “We come with nothing and take nothing away, and meanwhile, the body flaps until it can flap no more. We eat, sleep, empty our bowels, and inevitably grow old. We do not choose to leave but are booted out. We were born in ignorance, and should we die in ignorance, we will have lived in vain.” I completely agree with his assertion. However, this is not the only insight readers will find in this book, “Escape To Paradise and Beyond.”
In addition to discovering what he had long been pursuing, readers will be both thrilled and captivated by the journey itself—marked by a satirical tone that critiques certain prevailing issues. Maitreya weaves humor richly, not sparingly, throughout his writing, so be prepared to laugh and laugh and laugh.
This book is, above all, about launching into deep and living a more meaningful, purposeful life—one that stands in contrast to the way most live today.

I enjoyed reading this autobiographical novel by Maitreya. Impeccably written, it’s an amazing testament to the undaunted human spirit. Despite a pretty rough start in life, his positive adventurous spirit leads him down many paths while seeking a way to always enjoy life. I find myself reflecting on his difficulties while facing my own and it has given me inspiration and helped me develop the skill of always taking the best in any given situation. Maitreya shows through his choices that Paradise need not be an impossible goal!!! I’m certain that by reading this novel it can bring anyone a bit closer to Paradise!!!!

Through a whirlwind of travels and adventures the book remained interesting throughout. The use of language was catchy and often humerous such as the author referring to himself as a simpleton. At intervals he contacts Hare Krishna devotees, and even spent four days in one of their temples, but doesn’t consider their path as one he would pursue. At last being impressed by the expanse of truth in the pages of the Srimad Bhagavatam the author recognizes the significance of leading a God centered life, which the Hare Krishnas ideally aim for, and finally discovers conviction and purpose on his life’s journey.

Maitreya’s book is an exotic travel log, externally spanning the globe and internally by evolving consciously with each provocative encounter. It’s a thoughtful running commentary on the state of the world and its people. His dry wit will have you laughing at his often pointed perspective, delivered in a very descriptive style. Everything is tagged and weighed by a curious intent and keen power of observation, which protects him from the allurements, illusions, and dangers present everywhere. This serves him well in keeping him intact and sane, allowing him to enter the domain of Absolute Truth (however immaturely, represented by young, eager followers). All his questions are answered and his circling doubts put to rest, enough to come closer and live the life.
This book will stimulate your introspection and open your eyes to the things that put us to sleep. If you follow Maitreya’s exploits, perhaps you can save a lot of time and head straight to the finish line without going through the heartaches and hazards of your own trip around the world. Well done, Maitreya.

I love that the author was very descriptive when talking about the environment. It felt as if I were there in those places. The author has had a lot of experiences, so much so that I haven’t had 5% of them in my whole life. The author had a total of 6 escapes before he finally surrendered his life to Lord Krishna. This book taught me a lot and made me reflect on my life soberly. Since everything is lost to death, why collect more than is necessary? What is the need for fame? I learned about envy and its effects. I also love the way the author views some things, such as when he calls privileged expatriate life a “fool’s paradise.”

Escape to the Paradise and Beyond is an intriguing chronicle of a truth-seeker’s slow but steady progress toward the path of enlightenment. Beginning with the simple feeling of not belonging and even clueless about what exactly one’s looking for (except for the feeling of “not this!”) the author gradually unwinds the tale of his soul search for something beyond the ordinary contemporary lifestyle. Beginning in darkness and coming to enlightenment, Escape to Paradise and Beyond embraces the victory of the sincere seeker’s determined quest for the purpose and meaning of life. It’s a valuable addition to anyone’s library.

Maitreya’s spiritual quest is deep and laced with substantial insight and brilliant wit. Wave after wave of delightful vignettes keep the reader on the edge of their seats wondering what could possibly happen next. The fact that he eventually finds the Holy Grail makes it particularly satisfying and pertinent to every seeker of truth. I am thankful that he has taken the time to share it with us.

It is an honour to send an appreciation for Maitreya’s book. I was glued to it for five days, patiently waiting for that glorious moment when Maitreya finally made the big step to embrace spiritual life on about page 252. I travelled the world through his adventures, and learned a lot from him. His writing style is humorously enjoyable. Anyone who values the literary genre of “How I came to Krishna Consciousness” will certainly find a remarkable journey described in his book.
